Hell and Heaven

There are seven billion hells and heavens, a pair in everyone.

In constant tussle with one another, they make us many of one.

Every decision, each word, all the thoughts that appear

Reflections of hell or heaven, in our internal world.

Like the birds, bees, tigers and monkeys, we are beasts,

With an all important distinction: we’re able to rise above instinct.

There are seven billion hells and heavens, a pair in everyone.

Sometimes we veer closer to the light above, others we come undone.

We are a collection of causes and conditions, sailors

Navigating life’s sea, battling storms and savoring fresh breeze.

Like nomads of old, we go city to city, continent to continent

Searching as always for acceptance, love and happiness.

There are seven billion hells and heavens, a pair in everyone.

I feel both of them daily, sometimes occurring as one.

Decisions shape decisions, days turn into decades

Clarity and uncertainty, lust and love; it goes both ways

Like the devil and angel on each shoulder, choices weigh heavy

Boulders being carved into sculptures, we’re ever-changing yet steady.

There are seven billion hells and heavens, a pair in everyone.

Mania & depression, I veer from bad to good, never really done.

Hellish lows and heavenly highs unite in this soul of mine.

I feel both Indra and Shiva, creation and destruction combined.

On rare days, I’m a conduit for Ma Saraswati, creating,

I am forever in flux: Moksha in Maya appears, but fleeting.

There are seven billion hells and heavens, a pair in everyone.

I am one of these seven billion, a part of life’s bull run.

Navigation is futile, outrunning forces too hostile.

Craving and aversion will persist until the end of time.

So to find immaculate bliss, that state sublime,

Change expectations and your mind’s frame

Facing both hell and heaven, just the same.
